Tell us about your TV Experience …
I currently work as a reporter at WBNS in Columbus, Ohio. I previously held the position of anchor/reporter at several stations, including KHAS in Hastings, Nebraska, WLTX in Columbia, South Carolina, WTOL in Toledo, Ohio, KPHO in Phoenix, Arizona, KUTV in Salt Lake City, Utah and WISN in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I’ve covered a number of national stories including: President Gerald Ford’s funeral, Super Bowl 45, and the shootings at Virginia Tech.
Craziest Memory from your 1st TV Job …
I have a lot of crazy memories from my first job. We were so small market, it was just me and a sports guy to put on all of the weekend newscasts. I wasn’t a one man band, I was a one man show! The craziest memory though has to be the night we got snowed in at the station. We literally couldn’t leave and stayed there all night long. No one came to plow or help us get out. My car got stuck at the bottom of the driveway initially that day and stayed there. My hair had icicles and I was soaked by the time I made it up the hill to the station. And, once again, we were so small market, we weren’t doing news or cut-ins overnight, we were just hanging out!
Your Favorite Types of Stories to Cover …
My favorite type of story is any story that is good to tell. Something that has good visuals, excellent sound and is just a good story that people want to watch!
What makes a Reel Memorable? …
Good, demonstrative stand-ups make a really good reel, along with memorable stories.
Why Coach? …
I love to help people just getting started in the business. I think those not in the business yet have a certain perception of it that doesn’t always coincide with the reality of it. I find it fun to share the ins and outs of what we actually do on a daily basis. I also love to help people learn to write well and work with photographers as a team. Both are essential.
